What Matters Most About Credit Monitoring

What Credit Monitoring Includes

ithinkfi credit monitoring includes a monthly credit score update, identity theft alerts, and educational tools that explain how to improve your score.

The service is included with ithinkfi membership at no additional cost. Each month you receive an updated score along with a summary of the factors moving it up or down, so you can see progress over time instead of guessing.

Reading Your Credit Score

Most credit scores range from 300 to 850, with scores of 670 and above generally considered good.

The score is calculated from five main factors: payment history carries the most weight, followed by amounts owed, length of credit history, new credit, and the mix of credit types. Paying on time and keeping balances low are the two levers with the biggest impact.

Score RangeRating
800-850Exceptional
740-799Very good
670-739Good
580-669Fair
300-579Poor

What to Do When an Alert Fires

When an alert fires, verify whether the activity belongs to you first, then contact the creditor and freeze your credit if it does not.

Start by reviewing the alert details and checking your own records. A new inquiry from a lender you recently applied with is normal; an inquiry you do not recognize is a warning sign.

For activity that is not yours, contact the creditor listed in the alert to close the account, then place a fraud alert with the credit bureau. Call ithinkfi customer service at 800-873-5100 if the activity touches your ithinkfi accounts, and review the guidance in the Security guide for the full response checklist.

Credit Monitoring vs Credit Freeze

Credit monitoring watches your file and notifies you of changes, while a credit freeze blocks new credit applications until you lift it.

Monitoring is detection: it tells you when something happens. A freeze is prevention: it stops lenders from pulling your file for a new account, which stops most identity theft before it starts. The two tools work best together.

Credit freezes are free to place and lift with each of the three major bureaus. Independent guidance on freezes and fraud alerts is published by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

The monthly score update caught a credit inquiry I never made. I reported it the same day and stopped a fraudulent account.

This guide does NOT cover trusts, institutional funds and non-resident files, which run through separate desks.

The published review confirms the headline figures on this page held for four consecutive quarters.
