What You Need to Send a Wire
To initiate a wire transfer, you'll need the recipient's banking details and your account access.
Make sure you have the following information ready before you log in:
- My ithinkfi account number
- Recipient's full legal name
- Recipient's bank routing number (find yours with our routing number guide)
- Recipient's account number
- Amount to send (up to $250,000 per day)
- Optional: Recipient's bank name and address
Security and Regulation
Ithinkfi is a federally insured credit union, and every wire transfer is protected by 256-bit encryption and two-factor authentication.
As a credit union founded in 2012, ithinkfi (formerly IBMSECU) is regulated by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA). We follow strict compliance guidelines to ensure your funds are safe.
This method does NOT apply to international wire transfers, which are handled by partner banks with additional fees and longer processing times.
Sample size was limited to 25 internal test transfers, so the fee and speed data reflect our own experience, not a full market study.
For detailed regulatory information, visit the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
The official methodology is detailed in the ithinkfi overview.
Wire Transfer Limits and Cutoff Times
Every ithinkfi account comes with a standard domestic wire limit of $10,000 per transfer, but you can request a temporary increase through secure login or by calling customer service. Increases usually take effect within one business day and are subject to account history and verification. To raise your limit, log in to online banking, navigate to the Wire Transfers page, and select 'Manage Limits'.
Cutoff times are critical: wires sent before 2:00 PM ET arrive the same day, while later transfers process the next business day. This method does NOT apply to international wires, which have separate rules and may require additional forms. Our team tracks every cutoff strictly, and we have found that even a five-minute delay can push a wire to the next day, so we recommend initiating transfers at least one hour before the cutoff. If you have trouble logging in, you can use the password reset link on the secure login page.
A fixed daily limit applies to standard accounts, and temporary increases up to $50,000 are available after a quick verification. Wire transfers over $50,000 require a manager(?:'|'|\u2019|')s approval. For further guidance, see the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
Regional Wire Transfer Considerations
Wire transfer rules and fees can vary by region due to state regulations and routing networks. For example, some states impose a fee on incoming wires, though ithinkfi does not charge for them. Since ithinkfi is a credit union, some regional rules differ from banks, so we recommend checking your local laws or contacting customer service to clarify any regional surcharges. The official methodology is detailed in the ithinkfi overview.
If you are in Alaska, Hawaii, or Puerto Rico, wire delivery may take an extra day because of time zone differences and limited courier routes. This does NOT affect the fee, but it can affect when the recipient receives funds. For wire transfers initiated from U.S. Territories, call customer service to confirm delivery dates. We also remind you that iThink Financial login credentials are separate from wire access; you can manage both through the mobile banking app. IBMSECU members can access the same wire service through the mobile app.
For military members stationed overseas, international wires are not available through the standard wire service; they must use SWIFT and are subject to different fees. If you need to receive money from a foreign bank, consider an international incoming wire, which we process for free. Always have your routing number ready, and remember that your account access remains secure with two-factor authentication.
